This fourth album from Led Zeppelin was the first to have a title comprised of symbols rather than words, which has created a talking point for it over the years, now referred to, most commonly, as Led Zeppelin IV the band initially released the album in a sleeve that just had four hand drawn symbols on it, no easily expressable title and no reference to the band name. Atlantic records distributed these symbol graphics to the press for inclusion in the charts and reviews. The title was generally viewed as an anti-commercial statement that was highly controversial at the time. However, the official line is that Page wanted to test whether the music could sell itself following the relatively negative reviews of Led Zeppelin III. Evidently it could, the album is one of the best selling in history!
